Oriental dancers

Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947)
20th century, Silver-plated bronze

The two dancers depicted in sensual poses wear an oriental costume, a Charleston-style bonnet headdress, and various bracelets on their wrists and ankles. The base is made of green, red, and black marble with light green alabaster tesserae, and they are signed D. CHIPARUS. The Romanian artist naturalized French became fascinated by Oriental art and in particular Egyptian art, which especially after 1922, the year of the discovery of Pharaoh Tutankhamun's Tomb, became a source of inspiration for many French artists.
