Portrait of a Gentleman in a Pink Cloak
French or Italian (Veneto)
18th century, Oil on canvas
A work of remarkable quality both in the acute rendering of the unknown gentleman and in the broad, marbled robe made up of geometric folds, this painting is still unattributed. The stylistic features of this fascinating portrait suggest late 17th-century French painting, but its delicacy and sensibility leads us to believe that it may in fact be the product of the early 18th-century.
